FORCED LABOUR IN GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAINS
Virtually any workplace within the Uyghur Region is at high risk of forced labour. And it doesn’t stop there. Forced labour transfers have expanded far beyond the region – becoming normalized and institutionalized across supply chains in China.
Hundreds of global corporations are still exposed today – and many are failing to address the risks. From fashion to agriculture, electronics, solar, automotive, and critical minerals. Products tainted by forced labour continue to flood global markets.

WHY COMPANIES MUST EXIT
All companies must urgently trace their supply chains, address any points of exposure to Uyghur forced labour, and fully disengage from the Uyghur Region.
Here’s why:
Traditional human rights due diligence, like social audits and certification schemes, are not likely to be credible or effective in contexts of state-imposed forced labour.
Companies have minimal leverage to improve the conditions of workers trapped in state-imposed forced labour – companies cannot verify conditions, safely engage workers, or prevent and remediate abuses.
Disengagement is therefore the ONLY responsible action a company can take to avoid complicity in crimes against humanity (in line with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights)
GOVERNMENTS MUST HOLD COMPANIES ACCOUNTABLE
Governments must adopt and implement forced labour import bans to keep forced labour goods out of markets. Forced labour import bans are critical for creating legal and financial consequences for companies failing to act.
Under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA), the U.S. government has stopped thousands of shipments tied to state-imposed forced labour in the Uyghur Region. Many companies have been forced to rethink their sourcing, and many are cutting ties with suppliers linked to Uyghur forced labour. In 2027, the EU will enforce its Forced Labour Regulation, banning goods across the EU market. A growing number of countries around the world are strengthening or developing forced labour import ban laws.
WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE UYGHUR REGION?
The government of China is committing massive human rights abuses against Uyghurs and other Turkic and Muslim-majority groups because of their identity – mass detention, surveillance, family separation, cultural erasure, religious persecution, and state-imposed forced labour.
And it’s STILL happening today — global corporations are linked to these abuses.
In 2023 alone, over 3 million people were forcibly transferred into labour programmes. It’s part of a broader system of repression that experts have recognized as genocide and crimes against humanity – NOT “poverty alleviation" or “fighting extremism”. In January 2026, UN human rights experts warned that expanding labour transfer programmes across the Uyghur Region and China may amount to crimes against humanity.

COLLECTIVE ACTION WORKS
Since 2021, we’ve been mobilizing pressure on companies and policymakers to end supply chain links to Uyghur forced labour.
Our pressure is working, and change is already happening. After years of campaigning, corporations like Volkswagen and BASF have begun withdrawing operations.
